300th Anniversary

HAWKSHEAD HILL BAPTIST CHAPEL (1709 – 2009)

This year we celebrate 300 years of worship in our current location.

This may be surprising news because the plaque on the outside wall of the chapel states confidently, but mistakenly:

Baptist Chapel built AD 1678.

This date in fact has nothing to do with the building, but instead relates to a covenant made by a group of miners from the Torver area. In defiance of the law, they met together in order to worship in a freer way than was possible within the Established Church at that time.

By the turn of the century there was a relaxing of the law, and in 1709 William Dennyson’s cottage was registered as a Meeting Place. This is the current location of the chapel. Christians have continued to meet here, on and off, for 300 years. This year we give thanks to God for his faithfulness to us, and we invite our friends, near and far, to share with us in our Anniversary Celebrations (click to learn more).
